Bryce Christensen Excavating
Bryce Christensen Excavating sells landscape rock, gravel, and soil from its own St. George pit, and handles demolition, grading, and commercial site work across southern Utah.
Welcome to Bryce Christensen Excavating in St. George. The company was founded in 1990 and has spent thirty-six years moving dirt across southern Utah, through the stretch when Washington County went from a quiet corner of the state to one of the fastest-growing places in the country. A good deal of what got built during that period started with their equipment on the site.
But most people who deal with them are not general contractors. They are homeowners with a trailer and a yard that needs rock.
The Rock Yard
Bryce Christensen Excavating mines and sells its own materials out of a pit on the south side of St. George. Landscape rock, sand, gravel, crushed stone, and soil come out of the ground a few miles from where they end up.
If you have ever tried to match new rock to landscaping that has been sitting in the sun for a decade, you know it is harder than it sounds. Two loads that look identical on a website can read completely differently once they are down. Their front desk sends people home with samples so the comparison happens in the yard rather than after the delivery. Customers name Lori there repeatedly for exactly that: pulling options, matching what is already down, and making sure the right rock gets loaded.
Pricing comes up in almost every review, consistently and favorably. That is not an accident of generosity. Owning the pit means there is no supplier margin sitting between the ground and the customer.
You can haul it yourself or have it delivered. They are open from seven in the morning until five, which suits anyone trying to get a load moved before the heat sets in.
The Contracting Side
The same company handles commercial site development, demolition, grading, site utilities, excavation and site prep, hauling, and transport.
That range matters more than it might sound. A general contractor coordinating a demolition crew, a grading crew, and a utilities crew across three companies is managing three schedules and three sets of excuses. One outfit that does all of it removes most of that, and owning the material source means a project does not stall waiting on a delivery.
They do residential work as well, which is worth saying plainly, because a commercial portfolio that size can make a company look uninterested in a single lot.
Working Where People Live
Southern Utah’s growth means most excavation now happens next to occupied houses rather than out in open desert. Dust, noise, and truck traffic land on neighbors who did not choose the project.
The company has a public commendation on exactly this point. Daniel D. McArthur, the former mayor of St. George, wrote to them about their crews’ conduct during work along St. James Lane, praising how carefully they had limited the disruption to the surrounding neighborhood.
The same thing shows up at a smaller scale in their reviews. One homeowner had eight and a half tons of rock cleared from in front of their house, same day, by a driver who called ahead with his arrival time and left nothing behind. A former mayor and a homeowner with a rock pile are describing the same habit.
Thirty-Six Years In
Longevity in construction is not automatic. The trade is exposed to every downturn, and southern Utah has had several since 1990. A company that has run continuously through all of them has managed payroll, equipment, and material costs across conditions that closed a lot of its contemporaries.
They are still hiring, including CDL drivers, which is its own kind of signal about the state of the order book.
